“A cleanser for people who hate face cleansers.”
Remove the Day.
Leave Everything Else.
Twenty-Nine Prototypes. Each One Gentler Than The Last.
There was no HIBI cleanser for a long time, and it wasn't for lack of demand. Customers requested one in emails, in interviews, even in a product review.

You see, cleaning skin is easy — the thing most formulas do is reach for a strong, high-powered emulsifier that rinses everything off fast and completely. It works. But it also takes your skin's own lipids with it. That's the tight, squeaky, faintly raw feeling you get thirty seconds after you towel off, and it's the reason so many “gentle” cleansers aren't.
Having dry, sensitive skin meant that every cleanser we personally tried left our skin feeling worse than before. So we took on the challenge of formulating a cleanser that leaves skin feeling better than it found it, taking away the particulate matter that ages our skin while leaving everything else behind.
We tested different types of cleansers for months which turned into years. Nothing we made early on was gentle enough to carry the name.
Twenty-nine prototypes between October 2024 and August 2026 evaluating dozens of emulsifiers, and almost every change made the formula less powerful than the one before. We swapped the strong emulsifier system out entirely. We built the formula around a mild, oil-loving plant emulsifier and added only the minimum needed to let it rinse at all. When a tester told us prototype 22 was still too stripping, we cut it again. Then again.
The finished formula is the gentlest one that still works. That was the entire goal.
How to Use
Best at night. Best in the shower.
- One dropperful. 15–20 drops — about a nickel-sized pool in your palm.
- Onto dry skin. Massage over your whole face, eye makeup included. Dry matters: add water too early and it starts to rinse before it has dissolved anything.
- Add water, keep going. Wet your hands and massage for about 30 seconds, until it turns slightly milky.
- Rinse warm, not hot. Rinse until your skin feels clean. If a film remains, a damp microfiber cloth or soft sponge lifts it — most people won't need one.
- Then the rest of your routine. At night, that's the RESTORATION BALM on still-damp skin.
GENESI CLEANSE is built to take off sunscreen and makeup, and that's the evening's job. In the morning there's usually nothing to remove, and for sensitive skin, skipping that second wash is one of the easiest ways to leave your barrier alone.
Massage it onto dry skin before you step into the shower, then rinse it off under the water. We kept the emulsifier deliberately weak, so it takes more water to rinse than a foaming cleanser does. The shower gives it all the water it needs.
Cleanse, Then Restore
GENESI CLEANSE shares the RESTORATION BALM's soothing botanicals, so your night routine starts and ends in the same place.
- Squalane
- Blue tansy
- Helichrysum
- Boswellic acids
- Jojoba esters
Clean, Effective Ingredients
Plant-derived polyglyceryl esters
Origin: Germany
Emulsifiers are a modern invention, so there's no ancient story here. They're just the part of a cleansing oil that decides how your skin feels afterward.
An emulsifier is what lets oil rinse away with water. Research on cleansers has found that the stronger the cleansing agent, the more of the skin's own lipids and proteins it removes, and that this is what leaves skin tight and dry after washing.
Our system is built around polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, a mild, oil-loving emulsifier. No ethoxylation, no sulfates. It took twenty-nine prototypes to find the gentlest balance that still works.

Sugarcane squalane
Origin: Brazil
Squalene is one of the main lipids in your skin's natural oil, part of the film that keeps it soft and holds moisture in. Squalane is its fully saturated, stable form, made here from sugarcane.
It's the largest ingredient in GENESI CLEANSE for two reasons. It dissolves sunscreen and makeup easily, and whatever stays behind after rinsing is something your skin already makes. It's lightweight and non-comedogenic, so it suits dry and sensitive skin without clogging pores.

Camellia seed oil
Origin: China
Oil-tea camellia has been grown in southern China for around 2,300 years. There its pressed seed oil, sometimes called “eastern olive oil,” has been used in cooking and in traditional remedies.
Like olive oil, it's mostly oleic acid. It also carries small amounts of squalene, vitamin E, phytosterols and sesamin, an antioxidant. A 2024 study reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effects from camellia oleifera oil. In this formula, it's a light, fast-spreading oil that helps lift sunscreen and makeup without a heavy feel.

Jojoba esters
Origin: USA
The O'odham people of the Sonoran Desert pressed jojoba seeds into a paste for sores, cuts and dry, cracked skin, long before jojoba reached modern skincare.
Jojoba isn't technically an oil. It's a liquid wax made almost entirely of long-chain wax esters, which are closer to the waxes in your skin's natural oil than any common plant oil. Jojoba esters are a firmer form of the same wax. Here they give the oil its slip during massage and leave a light, breathable film after rinsing. That film is one reason skin feels comfortable rather than bare.

Oat kernel oil
Origin: United Kingdom
Oats have been used to soothe itchy, irritated skin for centuries. Colloidal oatmeal is one of the few natural ingredients the FDA recognizes as a skin protectant.
That research is mostly on oat flour. The oil from the kernel is less studied, but it's unusually rich in polar lipids, the same family of lipids that hold the skin barrier together, along with linoleic acid. It's one of the ingredients chosen to stay on the skin after rinsing rather than to wash things away.

Pomegranate CO₂ extract
Origin: Turkey
In Ancient Greek myth, the pomegranate stood for life and renewal. It's a fitting symbol for what researchers have since found in its seeds.
Pomegranate seed is the richest known source of punicic acid, a rare omega-5 fatty acid studied for reducing moisture loss and supporting the skin's own barrier lipids. CO₂ extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide instead of heat or solvents, which preserves the more delicate compounds. It's the same pomegranate as our GLOW NECTAR.

Ceramides and phytosphingosine
Origin: USA
These are the two most intimidating words on the label, and the two that are already in your skin. Ceramides make up roughly half the lipid in your outer barrier — the mortar between the cells. Phytosphingosine is one of the building blocks your body uses to make them.
Both are bioidentical: structurally the same molecules your own skin produces, not plant stand-ins or lookalikes.
There's currently a lot of debate on how effective active ingredients are in rinse-off products. However, a recent 2025 study on a ceramide-containing cleanser found skin hydration 47% higher after 28 days. We've certainly noticed a difference in our versions which contained ceramides, which is why we chose to include these two.

Boswellic acids
Origin: India
Frankincense has been traded, burned and used on skin for thousands of years, from Egyptian temples to Ayurvedic medicine.
Ask RESTORATION BALM customers what they'd miss, and one answer comes up that we never set out to promise: less oiliness through the day. Sebum reduction was also one of the outcomes in the frankincense study behind the balm.
A cleanser is on your skin for about a minute, so we don't claim that effect here. Boswellic acids are in GENESI CLEANSE because the resin's scent is part of the ritual, and because in our own nightly use it leaves skin feeling balanced rather than oily. If you want boswellic acids working at the level they've been studied, that's the RESTORATION BALM's job.

Helichrysum flower oil
Origin: Italy
Its name comes from the Greek helios, sun, and chrysos, gold, after its bright yellow flowers, which keep their color long after picking. Around the Mediterranean, it has long been a folk remedy for wounds, burns and inflamed skin.
Researchers have identified arzanol and other compounds in Helichrysum italicum with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. In GENESI CLEANSE it appears at a low level, alongside blue tansy, as part of the scent you know from the RESTORATION BALM.

Blue tansy flower oil
Origin: Morocco
Our blue tansy flower oil yields a uniquely invigorating and uplifting quality to the RESTORATION BALM. Its deep indigo hue imparts a distinctive color to the final product due to its significant chamazulene component.
We don't just include this for the aesthetics though. Chamazulene is an antioxidant that's shown evidence to be even more potent than Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Other components of this rare oil include alpha-pinene and myrcene.
These additional components have been studied for their ability to attenuate UV-induced photoaging and inhibit enzymes that break down the collagen and elastin that give our skin its youthful appearance.

Stay Informed
Who benefits most from GENESI CLEANSE?
Anyone whose skin feels tight, dry or faintly raw after washing. It was made for reactive, easily-upset skin, and it's the cleanser we'd recommend to anyone who doesn't want the first step of their routine undoing the last.
How do I use it?
Massage one dropperful onto dry skin, including over eye makeup. Add water and keep massaging until it turns milky, then rinse with warm water. It's easiest in the shower, since it takes a good amount of water to rinse completely. Follow with your usual routine — the RESTORATION BALM at night, on still-damp skin.
Will it remove makeup and sunscreen?
Yes, including long-wear formulas and mineral sunscreen. That's what the squalane and camellia oil are there for.
Does it foam?
No. Foam comes from surfactants that do their job by stripping. This emulsifies into a light milk when you add water, then rinses clean.
Will it break me out?
It's formulated to rinse without leaving a heavy residue, and it's water-free and preservative-free. Skin is individual, so the 90-Day Happiness Guarantee covers you either way.
Is it scented?
Only by the botanicals themselves — the same blue tansy and helichrysum as the RESTORATION BALM, at low levels. If you know you're sensitive to essential oils, this is worth knowing before you order.
Do I still need to double cleanse?
Most people won't need to. If you wear heavy makeup or a full day of sunscreen, follow with a gentle water-based cleanser if you prefer.
How long will a bottle last?
About two months of nightly use. Subscriptions default to a delivery every 8 weeks, and you can change that anytime.
How does the subscription work?
Your first order is 10% off and every delivery after that is 15% off, with free shipping. Skip a delivery, move the date or cancel anytime from your account.
Is it pregnancy safe?
Our formulations were designed based on a personal need for clean, effective beauty and anti-aging products which the founder felt comfortable using through pre-conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Though all of our products are built with this in mind, every body is different. Please speak with your doctor before using any new skincare ingredients during your pregnancy.
